brain(s) @ Resolution 2023

Creatives Sanya Malnar and Marianne Raynal take the stage together for the first time with their new work brain(s) as part of Resolution 2023 at The Place.

The duo shares this experience with dance artists Andrew Scott and Nikita De Martin in an exciting triple bill. The evening revolves around the self, ranging from phenomenological views on perception and existence to concepts of private space and identity crisis.

Resolution is the biggest annual showcase for new choreography and performance works in the UK, offering artists a platform to present their work on an established London stage. Resolution 2023 returns to The Place across 5 and a half weeks from Thursday 18 May to Tuesday 16 June 2023.

The Place is one of Europe’s most exciting, innovative dance spaces and home to London Contemporary Dance School; where artists from all over the world come to push creative boundaries, to experiment and to perform outstanding new work for audiences who expect to be surprised, inspired, and delighted.

Sanya Malnar and Marianne Raynal’s brain(s) is a considered, carefully curated work. Switching between blackout and spot-lit tableau, the two repeatedly reset their physical positions, their movement imbued with a twisting, lethargic quality that gives the effect their bodies are somehow disconnected from their personal being. An abstract contemplation on existential perception, brain(s) doesn’t prescribe what you might take from it, but the sensations conveyed are strong. That attention to detail is echoed throughout, particularly in the quirky, playful aesthetic of make-up and costume and the synchronicity between the two dancers - despite their movement being predominantly independent of each other. It’s an engaging, curiously atmospheric piece.

Sanya Malnar and Marianne Raynal perform an atmospheric exploration of existential perception. I appreciate how the two performers carve their individual experiences within the world they create, to the point where I questioned if they were even in the same world. Eccentric multi-plaid costumes and playful makeup are well-displayed as they pose intensely between punctuated black-outs. An effective motif of body-doubling, literally matching up their body parts, combined with well-placed unison syncs them together in their intentional, committed movement. One question remains: how can you end a piece when the world and the experience keeps on going?
